Andy’s journey into the niche of digital illustration, particularly focusing on Formula 1, began with a deep-seated passion for the sport. “The inspiration came from a love for Formula 1, a desire to express my creativity, and the chance to connect with fellow enthusiasts through my art,” he said. Crafting the Perfect Image

Describing his creative process, Andy described his approach. “I start with thorough research to capture the best outcome,” he explained. “Once I’ve gathered all the references, I sketch multiple rough ideas and layouts. This helps in selecting the most effective concept. Then, I focus on detailed sketching, ensuring everything is in proportion and perspective. After finalising the line work, I fill in flat colours, followed by shadows and highlights, and add subtle details to finish the artwork.”

J: What software and tools do you primarily use for your digital illustrations? Are there any specific techniques that you find indispensable?

A: I currently use an iPad Pro with a 2nd generation Apple Pencil and an app called Procreate. “Procreate is easy and intuitive, making it indispensable for my work,” he noted.

Staying Current in a Dynamic Field

A self-proclaimed F1 geek, Andy keeps up-to-date with the latest developments in the sport. he said.

“I’m a huge F1 fan and geek, so I follow a lot of F1 news accounts and all the teams to keep up-to-date with the current Formula 1 world. My creative side always enjoys seeing how each team approaches the year with their new liveries, how they incorporate their sponsors, team colours, etc”.

A Masterpiece in Detail

One of Andy’s standout pieces is the Emilia-Romagna GP 2024 poster featuring Ferrari. “This piece is special because I pushed myself to include as much detail as possible,” he recalled. “It features Roman brickwork, Italian culture, the passion of local fans, Senna’s 30th anniversary, and the Frecce Tricolori. The most challenging part was drawing all the small details within the brickwork.”

Balancing Creativity and Accuracy

When it comes to depicting Formula 1 cars and races, Andy strikes a balance between artistic creativity and technical accuracy. “It’s a delicate process, understanding the essence of the subject while staying true to its technical aspects,” he explained.

The Role of Research

J: What role does research play in your work? How much time do you spend studying the technical aspects of Formula 1 cars and the sport itself?

A: Research plays a huge role in my art process, as I like to keep up to date with the latest specs of each team, as they constantly bring upgrades to the Grand Prix. If I’m not drawing, I’m scrolling through social media for potential new ideas and references.

Overcoming Creative Blocks

J: How do you handle creative blocks or periods where you struggle to find inspiration? Are there any particular strategies you use to overcome these challenges?

A: I always have creative blocks and struggle with my work. I find it best to step away by either going out for a short walk, going to the gym, or a bit of gaming with some friends. These activities help reset my creative brain.

Influences and Inspirations

Andy draws inspiration from many artists. Within motorsport, he admires Jalcalara, Andrew Mytro, Nicolas Chuan, Nuriamurogio, and r4thbone. Outside of motorsport, Daniele Turturici, Plastic.pen, Jdebbiel, Cesarmorenoart, and Brycekhodraws are his favourites.

For those looking to break into sports illustration, specifically Formula 1, Andy offers valuable advice: “Be persistent and patient. Breaking into any niche takes time and perseverance. Keep practicing, refining your skills, and promoting your work. Stay dedicated to your craft and believe in your abilities. Success may not happen overnight, but with persistence, you can achieve your goals.”
